Hello!
It’s gotten to be entirely too long between updates but please know that Safe Hands rescue work continues unabated. We have now coordinated and provided transport for over 700 dogs and have rehomed 300 of them through this rescue!
I’ve been remiss in keeping you up to date on all the sweet guys and girls that have received medical care and the love of our foster families to prepare them for their new forever homes. I’m going to renew my efforts to keep you updated as soon as I get home because every one of these guys deserves to be known, to have their stories told, to be more than a number or a statistic.
I have been (and am currently) in Kanab, Utah training with Best Friends Animal Society in their dog care department. It has been a very educational experience to see how they run their sanctuary and care for the dogs here.
While I’ve been away Tess has been manning the ship and done an excellent job. By the time I get back at minimum 9 of our dogs and pups will be in new forever homes!! Tess has also facilitated getting Isa’s babies, Olivia, Ranger, Rhett and Scarlett, into foster in the Minneapolis area where they can now meet families interested in giving them forever homes. We thank Leah for keeping them for us in Austin until we had room for them so that we could save these sweet pups - 4 healthy, happy, rambunctious pups are no small handfull!! Big thanks also to the indefatiguable Stephanie T. who returned from a business trip to find a handful of adoption finalizations waiting for her.
Our fearless transporter #1, Margie Swift, has also been incredibly hard at work on our spay and neuter initiatives. She has been in contact with other spay/neuter programs, Petsmart Charities and is reasearching funding options and planning requirements so that we can realize our goal of reducing the number of unwanted litters in Harlan. She and I have been working on a Puppy Promises Program (yes, we took this concept from Saving Shelter Pets) which would keep puppies out of the shelter and get them directly into rescue while also providing spay for the mother dog and ending her reproductive cycle. Margie has also brought additional rescues into the fold which increases the number of dogs we can save on each transport. Both of our last transports had over 50 dogs on them!!
Of course the Harlan shelter is once again overflowing and we are looking to coordinate a transport for early September. I’ve attached photos of some of the great dogs and pups there looking for a safe place to go and a family to love them. If you think you could help by fostering any of these dogs and pups please let us know. There are many more dogs at the shelter so if you know someone interested in a specific sort of dog you don’t see in the pictures let us know that too. And as always, please forward on to anyone you think might help. It feels really good to help save a life, if you are able try it and see for yourself!
We need foster homes for the dogs and puppies in the attached photos:
Antonella - collie mix puppy with bad mange which is being treated, she is about 15 pounds currently
Cookie - adult female mixed breed 35 - 40 pounds
Jaxs - hound dog, male, 50 - 55 pounds

Roseline - female, adult, about 25 pounds, terrier or spaniel mix
